Sobeys, Safeway and IGA Goes Above And Beyond To Fight Hunger


(Winnipeg, Manitoba, Jan 30th, 2019) – With the focus of providing nutritious meals to Manitoba’s families and their commitment to supporting local communities, today Sobeys Inc. presented a donation of $122,787.12 in support of Harvest raised during their ‘Joy of Giving’ campaign.

Winnipeg Harvest is humbled to accept this donation on behalf of the 64,000 hungry individuals we serve across the province and thank all of the staff, volunteers, and customers who donated food, time and dollars at the many Sobeys locations in the past months. We are thrilled to be able to use this donation towards continuing to make emergency food accessible for those in need.

“We want to recognize and thank all of the incredible staff at Sobeys, Safeway and IGA who really went out of their way each and every day to ask customers for their support”, says Keren Taylor-Hughes, CEO of Winnipeg Harvest. “We really wouldn’t have been able to achieve this without their continued commitment and consistency at the registers, selling hampers and taking donations throughout the holidays, thank you to those who worked so hard for us, and to everyone who showed their support”.

This year’s holiday campaign saw everyone getting into the holiday spirit by raising a record-setting $2.7 million in food and funds across Canada. This jaw-dropping total was raised through both the check-stands in-store, as well as the Food Hamper Program which was launched in November 2018. Sobeys Inc. Better Food Fund also generously committed to matching each donation up to $250,000.00 on December 1st across the country. Each month over 850,000 people turn to food banks for help. More than one-third of those are children and youth. Sobeys continues to offer support in this fight with their several holiday initiatives during the holiday months, and their great work happening across Canada.
