‘Tis the season of giving and Manitobans are some of the most generous people on earth.

That’s why, we wanted to share with you 5 reasons why your gift is so important, why it will make a real impact on the lives of children, families and neighbours across Manitoba.

#1: The Number of Hungry Manitobans Keeps Rising

We continue to see great need in our communities. 52,000 people access food banks every month; almost 23,000 are children. Many more access food through soup kitchens, daycares, schools and other meal and snack programs.

Many families on fixed or low incomes need to choose between eating and paying rent, and with food prices expected to increase 4-6% in the new year, the number of hungry Manitobans we feed is likely to increase – and we need your help.

Be a Harvest Hero. Give the gift of food – and help us to provide more than 11 million lbs. of emergency food this year.

#2: To Fuel the Learning and Well-being of Children

Manitoba has one of the highest child poverty rates in Canada – and over 40% of our food bank users are children. Without proper nutrition, kids have trouble learning, fall behind in school and often get sick.

Every month, nearly 23,000 kids access food from more than 300 food banks, daycare and school food programs.

Be a Harvest Hero. Give the gift of food and help keep kids fed and fueled for learning.

#3: To Help Lift People Out of Poverty

Food banks are often the first point of contact for a person in need. People come for food, but we ensure it doesn’t end there. Harvest helps people with their taxes, connects them with other programs and provides skills training so clients can find jobs.

Our 4-week warehouse training program helps participants develop abilities in shipping and receiving, safe operation of warehouse equipment, product quality control, inventory maintenance and order pickup.  We also offer a kitchen training program.  Our courses have an 81% completion rate, with many graduates finding employment soon after.

Skills training helps people find meaningful work, helping to break the cycle of hunger and poverty in Manitoba.

Be a Harvest Hero. Help train people and change lives. Every dollar counts. Please give generously. It takes $1,200 to train one student.

#4: Advocacy to Break the Cycle of Poverty

You may already know that 10,000 volunteers help us deliver emergency food to more than 300 food banks and agencies across Manitoba every month.

But did you, know that Winnipeg Harvest brings more than food to the table?

Harvest also provides guidance and information, training, tax and other client support services. We offer public tours and presentations throughout our community to help educate people about the challenges of hunger and poverty. We also offer school programs like Poverty Pledge and Alternative Spring Break to inspire and activate youth to help shape their communities.

Be a Harvest Hero.  Your donation helps us to advocate for those who need our help, and to engage others in preventing hunger and poverty in Manitoba.

#5: No One Deserves to Go Hungry (especially over the holidays)

For many, the holiday season is a time to eat, drink and be merry. Unfortunately, for large numbers of Manitobans, that is simply not possible without support.

Hunger doesn’t take a holiday. We need your help to feed hungry Manitobans this holiday season and in the new year. We need your help to continue this life changing work.

Be a Harvest Hero.  Every dollar you give will change a life. Give online now.

**Your Gift of Time is also very welcome. Email volunteer@winnipegharvest.org and simply say “I want to volunteer.” We’ll take it from there.

Thank you so much for helping fight hunger and feed hope.

Happy Holidays!
