Volunteer FAQs

What is the atmosphere like?

Winnipeg Harvest works hard to provide a friendly and fun atmosphere for our volunteer family. The team is comprised of many different individuals who come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, faith communities, ages and abilities.

How old do I need to be to volunteer?

Winnipeg Harvest can accommodate anyone of almost any age, however, activities are limited for the very young (under 5-6 years).  Proper adult supervision by either a parent or guardian is required for anyone under the age of 16.

Can I volunteer with a Group?

Winnipeg Harvest does accept volunteers who want to come in as a group. Minimum group size is four people and the maximum group size is 25 (including group leaders). Groups can volunteer Monday – Friday morning, afternoon, or evening as well as Saturday afternoon. The time allotted for each group is typically 1.5-hour time slots.

Can I just show up to volunteer?

No.  Advance notice is required for individuals and groups. Due to the amazing number of groups who choose to support us, we require some advance notice.  If you have a specific date in mind, book early!

Individuals are asked to contact the volunteer department to schedule a volunteer orientation prior to the first shift. Once the orientation has been completed, we find your areas of interest and review our schedule. Each day, volunteers are scheduled to ensure that we are not overstaffed or under staffed.

Is the schedule flexible, how often do I have to volunteer?

Our volunteer schedule is flexible and varies depending on the volunteer needs in each department and your availability.  We ask for a minimum commitment of 1 hour per shift, or 3 hours per month.  Time commitments will be discussed during your orientation interview.

Will training be provided?

Yes. Training in each area is provided for each task that you choose to undertake.

Is There a Cost to Volunteer?

No, there is no cost to volunteer with us, however monetary and food donations are gratefully accepted. Check out the list of our top 10 most wanted food items.

Where can I park?

We have a large parking lot across the street from 1095 Winnipeg Avenue, as well as meter-free parking for two hours along the street directly in front of our building.
